Excerpt from "Looking Back"
by P.M. Bishop. Printed by Taylor & Sons 1993
At an early age of two years and eight months I started my schooling, in what must have been one of the loveliest infant schools in the country. It was situated in Gaston's Road, an old sturdy building. The ground floor was the National Boys School. This school catered for boys aged seven to fourteen years of age. The mixed infants, aged three to seven, occupied the first floor. There was a small walled playground for use by both schools, at different times of course. The infant school was reached by an enclosed flight of stone steps - very dangerous for us small souls, though I do not recall any accidents occurring.
