Remember the old school yard 1
by Susan Barrow

My name is Sue Cleaver and I am the Lollipop Lady for C. of E. Primary School Malmesbury. Before I was married my Maiden name was Barrow and I have lived in Malmesbury since the age of 4 years old. I attended the Junior school in Cross Hayes (which is now the Library) from the age of five. Then I attended the primary school in Gastons Road which was later used by Bremilham School for Arts and Crafts, (do you remember Mr Saunders the Sweetie Man and his Green Van at the gate breaktimes), then onto Tetbury Hill for the final years of primary. Our headmaster was Mr Price 1960-1965.

After primary I moved onto Bremilham School Corn Gastons Malmesbury for secondary education. The headmaster was Mr Richards (Gabby Richards), I don't know why he was called Gabby. He used to walk around the school wearing a black cape and hat and always with his hands behind his back and there was strictly no running in the corridors.

Detention was being sent to a cubby hole in the main corridor, where everyone passing could see you including the headmaster. All the time wishing he wasn't going to pass by, I was sent once with a girl called Denise for cheeking a Prefect.

The teachers I remember at Bremilham were Mr Kidd, Mr Blewitt, Mr Scanlon, Mr Salt, Mr Tagg, Mr Furzman, Mr Johnson, Mrs Holroyd, Mrs Ponting, Mr Jones, Mr Beswick, Mrs Ratcliffe, Mrs Martin, Miss Patterson, Mr Ruck and Mr Haines.

There were more teachers but I can't remember their names, perhaps other pupils can. Does anyone have a school group photograph from any of the schools mentioned that have me in them, as I only have one taken at Cross Hayes, and that was an individual photo, not a group one.

Gill Hitchman found a photograph for Sue 1966

I can remember we had a uniform for Bremilham, grey skirt, white blouse, blue jumper or cardigan, tie and white socks with sensible shoes. When I left home in the morning for school my skirt was knee length, by the time I met up with my friends, my skirt had been rolled up around my waist to become a mini skirt, as did most of the other girls. One skirt I had was box pleats and never hung right as a mini, but hey! we thought we were the bee's knees.

Can anyone else remember me and the times we spent at these schools, do please get in touch, look forward to hearing from you.

Love Sue

Remember the old school yard 2
by Bobby Barrow

Hi there my name is Bob barrow and I went through the whole Malmesbury school system from the old Cross Hayes to good old Bremilham, my most outstanding memory of Cross Hayes was this horrible dinner lady standing over me and forcing me to eat liver.

Next was the primary school at the bottom of Tetbury Hill, my favourite teacher there was Mr Wilson, anyone remember him? Then we had to sit the old 11 plus, I passed the first part but failed the second which saw me in Class 1A1, I progressed through school till I left as the last batch of 15 year olds, they raised the school leaving age to 16 the next year.

Some of the teachers I recall were of course Mr Scanlon, Mr Beswick, Mr Hinder and Mr Cole, and I will always remember Miss Roberts, as will any lad who tried to sit through one of her Human Biology lessons, there were a number of other teachers but I just wanted to name a few.

On the girl front you could say my real girlfriend was Susan Bishop whom I told my Mum I was going to marry, and girls I had a bit of a crush on were Candy Neale and Pauline Bolton. The latter was quite funny as she was a senior and I was a first former, I used to seek her out for a dance in the dinner hour, remember the St Bernard's Waltz and the Gay Gordon's.

I still come back to Malmesbury as my parents and sister Sue still live here, we have a Motorhome and park up at the Burton Hill Caravan Park, and in the evening my partner and I will do a tour of the pubs. It is great when you bump into old friends and have a chat and a drink.

I have many memories of Malmesbury and it would take a book to tell it all, but the one thing I can say is that the thing that makes Malmesbury special is the people.
