Now this is an interesting site but no mention is made of the front line service by Iinstalation and Service Dept run by Mr Jarvis, Mr Woolmore and the worthy tean of nucleonic engineers. Glynn, Cason. Garrard, Williamson, Bingham, Reading, Spiller and many others that slip my mind. Where are they all I remember Loveday and Glover and some of the others. We must have modified hundreds of scalers and serviced thickness gauges on sites all over England. Not to mention all the hospitals and research institutions visited. Come on now make your names heard.

"Having seen Tony Garrard's comments, I can recall a few more names at both the Southend Main factory and the new Rochford site - was it opened in 1960? (which was very difficult to leave onto the main Ashingdon Road at 5p.m. each evening)

Other names remembered include John Meredith, Keith Potter, Graham Lamb, Pete Hancock, Bob Murray, Bernie Tate, Bill Whiddett & Rosemary, Mrs. Ryman - Charlie Woolmore's P.S. Chris Caunce & Bernard Price (Radar Lab.) Alec Cason, Ron Spiller, ' Thorpe', John Mundy, Eric Overall, Jock Ritchie, John Palmer, John Marriott, Tony Tucker, Roy Gozzett, 'Titch' & in the Stores, Henry the Boss, Jack Southgate & John Taylor....... not bad for 50 years ago, eh? So where are they all?

I left Ekco Electronics I.& S.D. as a result of hearing my wage was to be raised to only £10.15s p.w. (that's Ten Quid and Fifteen Shillings) as announced by Charlie Woolmore on my 21st. birthday. I retorted "Is that all.... the other engineers in the Lab. get £20 a week upwards!" C.W. answered "yes, but they've got wives and mortgages and families".... bleedin' nerve! I joined the G.P.O. (starting at £11.10.) as a Wireless Interference Investigation Officer at Southend and never looked back (and after losing a day's pay at Ekco was granted day-release with pay). Happy Days!"

Hello Ross,
I remember your Mum.Connie is my first cousin. All the Browns went to St: Josephs School.Alfons & Auntie Roma lived at Garsdon for a while. I use to bike out on a regular basis and collect large bags of chicken poo for the garden, after they gave me a big feed.Alfons got me a summer job driving a tractor on the local farm, at 5 shillings a day.I lived in Avon road a stones throw from Richard Paginton.
I live in Victoria Australia, since 1980,I really couldn't stand those winters, and the pathetic immigration programme that was in place at the time.Give my regards to your Mum and Dad.
Regards.
Peter Brown

Hi Peter
Unfortunately Connie passed on the 13/11/07. Her ashes are in the family plot in Malmesbury Cemetary. I wonder if you can identify any family members in the St Josephs picture on this site? My mum is there I am sure to the right in the second row down wearing a crucifix and a sweater. That would make this picture a bit later than the estimated 1944? Alfons and Roma were lovely unfortunately they too are gone. Anyway nice to hear from you and all the best down under. Ross

My mom worked for the E. K. Cole company during the war. She lived in South End on Sea, and worked assembling radios. Her name was Jessie Marie Lafferty.

Enjoyed reading about the wartime activities at the ECKO Radar plant.
My father,(Charlie Rouse) was a foreman mainly on coil winding and 88 sets and he told me something about the works and his memories when we visited Malmesbury in 1974. Now I have more information to fill out that part of his life. Thank you to all who have contributed.
Finally, does anyone know if Charles Exton is still living or have an address for him?
